My name is Peter Noorderijk. I work since 2001 in the ICT sector. Started as an all-round system administrator and grown to a senior consultant. In February 2012 I've started my own IT consultancy company: Imara ICT. Imara ICT design, implements and migrates advanced ICT-infrastructures. I’ve a strong focus on Backend Virtualization soluitons and especially Microsoft Hyper-V. Off course I’m also focused on the Microsoft System Center solutions because of the tight integration with Hyper-V. Last but not least I’m focused on Microsoft Exchange solutions. I’m blogging and publishing about these focus area’s at different places but I’m very pleased to blog about Hyper-V only here at HYPER-V.NU! You can follow me on twitter: @pnoorderijk

Virtual Connect, NIC’s, VLANs, Teaming… Tips and Tricks
Jun 8th
Configuring networking in Hyper-V is not that smooth as we would like it. You have al the possibilities you need but you need to know where you can configure what option and how you need to configure it. In this blog I will describe some tips and tricks and will show you how you can configure the several network components. This blog is based on a HP Hyper-V server (blade server) which is member of a Hyper-V cluster. The NIC’s (8 pieces) are presented through HP Virtual Connect. The total bandwith I received was 20 GB and I need to share that between the 8 NIC’s.
Another tool for managing Hyper-V Core-edition
May 10th
In my post about Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 Core or Full version I wrote about some tools which you can use for managing a Hyper-V installation on Windows Server Core edition. Recently I read on the Windows Virtualization Team Blog an article about 5Nine Manager for Hyper-V. Another great and free tool for managing a Core edition or Hyper-V Server.
5Nine Manager for Hyper-V can be installed on a remote server and you can manage every version of Hyper-V through a graphical user interface. It’s possible to manage multiple Hyper-V servers from a single console view. With 5Nine Manager for Hyper-V it’s possible to:
- Adding, removing, and editing virtual machines, virtual networks, and virtual disks
- Viewing resource allocation and utilization of virtual machines
- Full virtual machine snapshot management
- Event viewing and searching
- Hyper-V service management
- Graphical user interface for exploring files and network shares

Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 Core or Full version?
Apr 13th
Since Windows Server 2008 you’ve two options when installing Windows: Full installation or a Core installation. The Core installation is available for some server roles including the Hyper-V role. When you start the setup you’ve the option to choose between these versions.
SCVMM 2012 – Guest OS Profiles
Apr 13th
The SCVMM 2012 Library is quite different then the SCVMM 2008 R2 library. One of the new options available when configuring a Guest OS Profile is Roles and Features. From now on it is possible to select Roles and Features in the Guest OS Profile settings. The selected Roles and Features will be installed automatically when you deploy a Virtual Machine template and choose the appropriate Guest OS Profile. More >
How to check the version of the Integration Components
Apr 1st
In a previous post of mine about the importance of Integration Components I’ve explained why it is so important to install Integration Components. So keep in mind that when you update your Hyper-V host you also update the Integration Components. If you would check for a succesful update then you need to check te version of the Integration Components software. This can be done very easily.
Installing SCVMM 2012
Mar 23rd
Today I was lucky enough to have some time for installing System Center Virtual Machnine Manager (SCVMM) 2012 and have a first look at it! Although I’ve read the pre-requisites for installing SCVMM 2012 I didn’t follow them up so I can see what the installation wizard is doing when these requirements aren’t met…. So let’s rock and roll:
System Center Virtual Machine Manager News
Mar 23rd
Yesterday was an exiting day for System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) fans. Hyper-V.nu fellow Hans Vredevoort blogged about the confirmation of the SCVMM product team that SCVMM 2008 R2 SP1 is RTM: http://www.hyper-v.nu/blogs/hans/?p=581. This means that we can manage Dynamic Memory and Remote FX settings from SCVMM. In my opinion a must have for all Hyper-V environments! But, a download link can still not be found. Why does Microsoft do this anouncement and doesn’t make the download available? Common guys give us SP1!
Even more exiting was the e-mail I received with the subject: SCVMM 2012 Beta Available Now! And yes this anouncement makes sence because I can download the software immediately
. The beta can be download here.
Max amount of memory supported with Win2k8 and Win2k8 R2
Feb 22nd
Sometimes there is a little bit of confusion as to the maximum amount of memory supported with Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Jeff Woolsey makes a quick announcement to make sure we’re all on the same page as to the correct maximum memory limits for Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 with and without Hyper-V. BTW, The maximum memory hasn’t changed for SP1.
===============================================
Windows Server 2008 Maximum Memory Limits
===============================================
Windows Server 2008 x86
- Windows Server 2008 STD Edition supports a maximum of 4 GB of memory
- Windows Server 2008 EE/DCE support a maximum of 64GB of memory
Windows Server 2008 x64 with or without Hyper-V Role Enabled
- Windows Server 2008 STD Edition supports a maximum of 32 GB of memory
- Windows Server 2008 EE/DCE support a maximum of 1 TB of memory
The importance of Integration Components
Feb 16th
In this blog I’ll explain the importance of installing Integration Components in Hyper-V. Recently a customer asked me why virtual machines doesn’t perform well without Integration Components. Well to understand this I first need to explain something about the Hyper-V architecture.
Hyper-V architecture
Hyper-V has a so called Microkernelized Hypervisor architecture. This means that as less as possible components are running in the Hypervisor and in the Kernel Mode. The following picture illustrates this architecture:

Ring-1 is the Hypervisor. Only the CPU scheduler and Memory management runs in the Hypervisor. Everything in Ring 0 is running in Kernel Mode while everything in Ring 3 is running in User Mode. So drivers for the parent partition are executed in Ring 0 (Kernel mode).
Get memory information from host
Feb 8th
Well, here’s my first post for this Hyper-V Blog. I will start with a small one… but more is coming soon!
In this blog I will show you how you can view memory usage of virtual machine’s when you didn’t have a management tool available. We will query this information from a Hyper-V node itself. There’s a great way to do this: use PowerShell!
So first we login to the host and browse to a directory e.g. E:\Install. In this directory we will create a file named memory.ps1 (ps1 is the extension for a PowerShell script). Then we open the created file and paste the following script into it: More >
