Last tickets for Hyper-V.nu event up for grabs
Mar 20th
As you can see from the screenshot, only a few tickets are left for the Hyper-V.nu event on April 16th, 2013. Extension to December 1st of The Great Big Hyper-V Survey of 2012
Nov 20th
As most of our readers know by now is that we are currently asking users of Hyper-V to complete our second edition of The Great Big Hyper-V Survey. Last year we had several hundred people who took part in the survey.
Our original plan was to close the survey after one month, but after some consultation with Aidan Finn and Damian Flynn, we decided to keep the survey open until December 1st.
You Can enter the survey here:
http://kwiksurveys.com/app/rendersurvey.asp?sid=vtqoy6z8kos3imw25636&refer=
Meanwhile I had also offered a free copy of our Microsoft Private Cloud Computing book, which is a great resource on several System Center 2012 products and deployment of Hyper-V in a Private Cloud scenario. Because we have kept you waiting for another month, I am pleased to triple the number of books offered as a prize.
Both Aidan Finn and Damian Flynn were so kind to each offer an extra copy so now we have three Microsoft Private Cloud Computing books available.
So here is another opportunity for you to win one of the three books or enter the survey if you have not been able to do this. We are stressing that this survey is read by Microsoft and we are still able to influence what is important for the next release of Hyper-V. Be our guest!
All you need to do is tweet or blog with a reference to this blog:

Speaking at The Experts Conference 2012 again
Sep 19th
You have probably already seen a number of blogs and tweets about several events related to Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V.
Well, I am joining the party too!
For The Experts Conference (TEC), which will be held in Barcelona (22-24 October 2012) this is my third speaking engagement.
My first presentation for TEC was in Frankfurt and offered a deep dive into Storage in what was still called Windows Server 8. It was only one month after the \build conference. It was so early that I could only demo by using PowerShell, but it was a very early view on what was to come.
I was then kindly invited to speak at TEC 2012 in San Diego. There were very few European speakers so I was very honored indeed. My presentation was called Hot Storage Tricks with Windows Server 8. I did a last minute rename to Cool Storage Tricks because the weather had suddenly turned very cold. You need to be flexible these days.
This time, I will speak at TEC 2012 in Barcelona and now I will do two presentations:
-
The first one is called Configuring Hyper-V Networking with Confidence and Ease which focuses on the myriad number of new ways to configure networks in Windows Server 2012 and using the Hyper-V extensible switch. Topics such as NIC Teaming, Converged Fabric, Network Virtualization and Switch Extensions will be demonstrated. My talk is more or less a practical Part 2 of Didier van Hoye’s (@WorkingHardInIT) presentation called Networking Evolved in Windows Server 2012.
-
The second one is a modified repeat of my San Diego presentation: Hot Storage Tricks with Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012. Let’s hope the weather stays fine, or I have to rename the title of my presentation again.
TEC 2012 Barcelona promises to get a great Virtualization track focusing on Windows Server 2012, because several of my renowned fellow MVP’s will top the bill. Apart from Didier there will be:
If that isn’t enough reason to book the event as soon as possible, while there is still a discount which you can get by sending an email to TEC2012@Quest.com until September 21.
I will also be speaking at:
Windows Server 2012 Launch and Demo Day: October 4, 2012: Amstelveen, The Netherlands (INOVATIV)
Experts 2 Experts Virtualization Conference (E2EVC): November 2-4 2012: Hamburg, Germany (Event is sold out)
The Experts Conference US 2012

VKernel’s Mattias Sundling discusses The Expert Conference event with MVPs Hans Vredevoort and Anil Desai. Topics include highlights of the technical sessions presented by Microsoft, Quest and industry experts as well as updates and highlights of Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V3 advances.

Jump Starting Windows Server 2012
May 24th
With a new operating system around the corner there is an awful lot to learn. The release candidate of Windows Server 2012 that is expected in the first week of June contains a wealth of new features you have most likely already heard about. I have been able to test a large number of very rich features including Hyper-V, File & Storage and Networking. It is very hard to touch everything in a short period.
Therefore I strongly advise you to register for this Windows Server 2012 Jumpstart which is a two day live virtual class presented by Rick Claus and Corey Hynes.
Day One
Morning | Beyond Virtualization
• Game changers in the next release of the Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2012
• Massive scale increases, networking improvements, replication and disaster recovery is all in the box
Afternoon | Manageability
• Learn how you can manage a few systems up to a hundred – all from one console
• Server Core installs scaring you off? Learn about all your installation and management options
• Windows PowerShell automation and management at scale – all with built in tools
• Clustering—Cluster-aware updating
• Networking, Network Teaming, network configuration, SMB MultiChannel and RDMA
Day Two
Morning | Storage
• Learn how Continuous Availability of File Services improves workload reliability and performance
• Storage groups, disk provisioning, iSCSI and SAN integration
Afternoon | Remote Users
• Remote connectivity options for your workforce (DA)
• VDI and Remote Desktop Services deployment and changes

HP ProLiant Gen8 Tech Day 1 – Customer Inspired Innovation
May 8th
Today was the first of a 2-day HP ProLiant Gen8 Tech Day in Houston. The ten bloggers who were invited are all from the US except for me. Some of them I have met from other HP events like HP Discover in 2011 and an event in Madrid in the same year. Since I moved to Inovativ which is a 100% System Center & Hyper-V consultancy firm, hardware hasn’t been so much of an issue for me. You deal with whatever server, network or storage hardware the customer has. When I worked for a system integrator, HP was the one and only vendor we worked with, so I can say I know the product range quite well. It was surely a fantastic opportunity to come to Houston and be brought up to speed on the new HP ProLiant Gen8 server family.
We had a couple of really interesting sessions today, both from marketing and technical folks at HP. One good introductory presentation was by Gary Thorne (VP Strategy Industry Standard Servers and Software). Gary’s presentation was on Transforming the server experience with customer-inspired innovation. Most of the changes you will see in the Gen8 stem from over 100.000 customer interactions. Whenever there was a server down situation, HP would ask the customer to detail the problems so HP could learn from them. After all, the aim is to get the most amount of uptime with the least amount of effort, speed deployment of systems and deliver the desired performance. This is not something you get after just one round of interviewing customers. It is more like a multi-year project and it takes a large budget for R&D. HP spent $300M on R&D which is at least twice the amount spent on the previous generation.
