This article discusses how to troubleshoot the "Not Responding" host status that appears in the Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) Administrator Console. The "Not Responding" host status indicates that the VMM server cannot communicate with the host. If this communication is interrupted, even intermittently, you can expect the host status to change in the VMM Administrator Console.

ChkDsk may hang when checking a GPT Disk inside a Hyper-V Virtual Machine

Description / Summary

You are using Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Storage to provide volumes for Hyper-V Virtual Machines. When the volume has a size over 2 TB you are required to create this as a GPT Disk. You attach this disk to a Hyper-V Virtual Machine using the virtual SCSI Adapter.
You may experience a problem when the Volume is automatically checked during start of the VM by chkdsk, or when you manually start a chkdsk against such a volume. Chkdsk may hang in this scenario.

- You install the Failover Clustering feature on these computers.

In this scenario, you do not receive the following important message from the Validate Operating System Installation Option test:
The operating system install type (Full/Core/Hyper-V Server) is not the same for all of the servers.

HOTFIX: Nonpaged pool leak when you disable and enable some storage controllers in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Description / Summary

Consider the following scenario:
- You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
- You install a storage controller that uses the Storport.sys driver on the computer.
For example, you install the Hitachi PCI Fibre Channel adapter or the QLogic Fibre Channel adapter on the computer.
You disable and then enable the storage controller in Device Manager frequently.
In this scenario, nonpaged pool usage increases when you disable and enable the storage controller. If you trace the nonpaged pool usage or debug the computer, the trace or debug information indicates that the nonpaged pool usage that have the following tags keeps increasing:
- PlRB
- Dict
- RaRm
- RaDS
When the nonpaged pool memory is exhausted, the server may stop responding, crash, or encounter function failure.

On Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you may experience one of the following symptoms when you connect to a Hyper-V virtual machine using the Hyper-V Manager console or the System Center Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console:
- The mouse cursor is frozen or has disappeared
- The screen resolution has reverted to the default size
If you connect to the virtual machine using a Remote Desktop Connection (RDP), the symptoms listed above are not exhibited.

Consider the following scenario:
- You install the Hyper-V role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and that has Intel Xeon processors.
- You create a virtual machine (VM) that is running version 5 or 6 of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system.
- You select the Migrate to a physical computer with a different processor version check box under the Processor configuration for the VM.
- You start the VM.
In this scenario, the computer crashes. Additionally, you receive a Stop error.
